About ManchesterWere Manchester to be re-visited by the first Romans who built their fort in what is now Castlefield, what changes they would encounter! The world’s first industrial city has retained all the advantages of its position at the centre of transport and communication for the North West of England and beyond, and has evolved to become the first city of style and modernity. Manchester lies within easy reach of both the Peak District in Derbyshire and the Lake District in Cumbria, is situated 38.5 miles from Liverpool and the coast, and has a population of 2.5 million. In the Industrial age Manchester was the centre of the cotton industry, a fact reinforced by the many splendid Victorian buildings in particular the Town Hall by Alfred Waterhouse. Many old warehouses are now being transformed internally to modern luxury apartments, including the famous Hacienda from the Madchester music scene. Many of the Scientific achievements are recorded in the city’s Museum of Science and Industry, housed in the buildings of the world’s first passenger Railway. Regeneration has become synonymous with the city and the legacy of the Commonwealth Games 2002 has endowed the city with conference centres, hotels and a new stadium Eastalnds, now owned by Manchester City FC. At the other end of the city Old Trafford is home to Manchester United FC close to the Lowry Centre and Salford Quays. Shop till you drop at the Trafford Centre or simply browse around Deansgate, Royal Exchange or Arndale in city centre. Whatever your needs Manchester will not disappoint. |
